Taiwan Group Chairman Yu Conferred Honorary Doctorate Degree by NCU for Taking Taiwanese Engineering Industry onto Global Stage
TAOYUAN, December 18, 2024- Today the National Central University conferred an honorary doctorate degree on John Yu, CTCI Group Chairman, for his outstanding leadership and contributions to the Taiwanese economy and industrial development. Group Chairman Yu is one of the key people who ushered the Taiwanese engineering industry onto global stage. Thanks to his vision, the ever-innovating CTCI is able to retain the leading position in Taiwan as an EPC company and become one of the top 100 in the world, setting new industry benchmark in Taiwan.
The conferral ceremony, which took place at the NCU Auditorium, was graced by the presence of distinguished guests from the industry, government, and academia. Three guests of honor took the stage and offered their thoughts on Mr. Yu’s remarkable achievement. They were: Former Vice President of R.O.C (Taiwan) Vincent Siew; Wen-Yen Pan, Chairman of the CTCI Foundation; and Chien-Chung Li, honorary professor at Department of Engineering, NCU.
In his remarks, Mr. Siew said that Mr. Yu left a lasting impression on him during their over two-decade friendship due to his methodical way of doing things, humility, and pragmatic personality. Mr. Pan attributed CTCI’s culture of reliability and discreetness to Mr. Yu’s trustworthy character and his attention to the tiniest details. Mr. Li believed that Mr. Yu’s employee-turned-Group Chairman career path is an inspiring example for students to follow.
President Jou praised that Mr. Yu is more than an outstanding business manager, but a long-time champion of corporate social responsibility and sustainable development. Under his helm, CTCI has unceasingly developed intelligent engineering technologies and committed itself to sustainable development and net zero emissions by utilizing its core business capability. In its joint effort with its partners, CTCI has aimed to secure mutual benefit for the corporate bottom line and the environment. In his tenure, Mr. Yu founded the CTCI Education Foundation to promote sustainable education and train the next generation of engineers, with the ultimate goal of attracting the best talents to become engineers and ensuring the nation’s sustainable development. This is a commendable effort.
To him, the honorary degree is uplifting, according to Mr. Yu’s speech. It is uplifting not just on a personal level, but also on a company level, even on the industry level. The last 45 years saw CTCI’s expansion in terms of market field- from petrochemicals to non-petrochemicals to advanced technology; and in terms of geography- from Taiwan to overseas. In the process, CTCI became an engineering group that could compete with the likes of Europe, the US, Japan, and Korea, showcasing Taiwan’s engineering prowess to the world.
Under Mr. Yu’s leadership, 8,000 CTCI staff have upheld the spirit as the “Most Reliable” brand, and have been committed to the vision of being a “Guardian of Sustainable Earth.” While pursuing its business goal for growth, CTCI is equally devoted to global sustainable development, helping the owners meet their own net zero emissions targets through Green Engineering projects. CTCI’s exceptional achievement in sustainability is world-recognized: For ten years in a row, it has been selected as a Dow Jones Sustainability Emerging Markets index constituent, and has stayed among the world’s top 1% performer in S&P Global’s Sustainability Yearbook ranking—as the top place holder among global engineering peers.
Mr. Yu, whose growth paralleled that of CTCI, acknowledged the joint effort by CTCI staff. As he used to say, “I’m visible because I stand on the shoulder of the colossal CTCI. It wouldn’t be possible for me to come this far without CTCI and all my partners around the world,” a statement which reflects his life philosophy: “A man can walk fast alone, but only can he get to places beyond his reach when he walks with a team.”
