Taiwan CTCI’s New Milestone on ESG: TSMC Southern Taiwan Science Park Water Reclamation Plant Certified as Environmental Education Center

TAIPEI, February 5, 2024- The TSMC Southern Taiwan Science Park Water Reclamation Plant is the world’s first facility to successfully regenerate industrial wastewater and reuse it in the semiconductor process. Officially operating since September 2022, the water reclamation plant has recently been certified as an environmental education center, offering free environmental education courses to the public. CTCI welcomes schools and group visitors to make reservations at www.stsprwp.com.tw.

CTCI was commissioned by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) to design, build, own, and operate the plant for the next 20 years, providing clean water for TSMC’s chip-making business. Located in Tainan, the current capacity of the plant is 20,000 tons of water per day, effectively saving up to 30% of the municipal water usage at TSMC's Southern Taiwan Science Park plant. In the future, the water supply is expected to reach 67,000 tons, providing reclaimed water as a stable source of water withdrawal, thereby achieving sustainability goals.
The water reclamation plant has hosted over 40 educational tour sessions, welcoming more than 1,200 visitors. In order to promote knowledge about reclaimed water resources, an environmental education center has been established on the premises. Aligned with CTCI’s core concept of “green engineering,” the educational program encompasses five major aspects: “water resource utilization,” “wastewater reclamation techniques,” “corporate social responsibility,” “green engineering,” and “circular economy”. The current lesson package includes age-specific curriculum for elementary school students and a plant tour designed for students majoring in water resources and related groups. Moving forward, new sessions and themed activities will be gradually developed each year to further enhance the educational experience.
For over 40 years, CTCI has been deeply involved in the field of water resources, providing services in wastewater recycling and reuse for industrial and urban sewage, as well as the recycling of wastewater from high-tech industries. With outstanding engineering services, CTCI has become a crucial partner for various global clients. In addition to the TSMC Southern Taiwan Science Park Water Reclamation Plant, other notable CTCI projects include the Fengshan River Reclaimed Water Plant and the Kaohsiung Linhai Wastewater Treatment Plant. While providing a stable source of recycled water for industrial use, CTCI actively promotes the concept of water resources recycling to the public through environmental education, earning repeated acclaim from various sectors. In the future, CTCI will continue to provide engineering services with the “most reliable” quality and strive to achieve ESG goals as the guardian of a sustainable Earth.
