CTCI Hosted the Second Taiwan Sustainable Engineering Symposium, with Net Zero Emissions Promotion as Main Focus

In 2022, CTCI and CTCI Education Foundation once again jointly hosted “Taiwan Sustainable Engineering Symposium” in support for global sustainable development. This time, the main focus is on net-zero emissions, with three core themes: green engineering, sustainable governance, and decarbonization of the supply chain. The aim of the symposium is to bring engineering experts and scholars together to learn about CTCI's sustainable engineering achievements and discuss various sustainable practices.

The morning session saw some insights on “Green Water Engineering” and “Circular Economy: Turning Waste into Assets,” which were brought by Pen-Chi Chiang, Honorary Professor at the Graduate Institute of Environmental Engineering, National Taiwan University; Professor Li-Fang Chou at the Department of Public Finance, National Chengchi University; Professor Tsai-Chi Kuo at the Department of Industrial Management, National Taiwan University of Science and Technology, who also serves as Secretary General of Taiwan Academy of Corporate Sustainability; Jeff Hsu, Vice President at CTCI Corporation; and Cheng-Lung Su, President of ECOVE Solvent Recycling Corporation. The afternoon session saw themed-discussions based on small groups, known as the World Café. The nine themes include green engineering, water resources, resource recycling, environmental protection, social inclusion, corporate governance, chemical engineering, electronics industry, and construction engineering. During the discussion process, participants were encouraged to reflect on the issues and share their insights, as a way to find new opportunities for action. In all, the symposium brought together more than 200 participants, and was a success in terms of making people aware of CTCI's sustainable development achievements, as well as exerting CTCI’s influence in the realm of sustainability.

According to Eugene Chien, Ambassador-at-Large of the Republic of China and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the CTCI Education Foundation, the core spirit behind the 27th Conference of the Parties to the “United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change” (COP27)—held in Sharm El Sheikh in 2022— was “Together for Implementation,” which means calling for all parties to join hands to fulfill their climate commitments. The conference also advocated that all nations have common but differentiated responsibilities when it comes to climate change. Moreover, according to Chien, Taiwan is expected to feel greater impact from the global carbon market issue, which is something that is worth paying attention to. Since late 2022, CTCI Education Foundation has become the 11th observer as non-governmental organization in Taiwan to join the UNFCCC, and is eligible to attend the COP 28 this year, which is due to take place in Saudi Arabia from November 30 to December 12.

The world is about to enter an era of carbon pricing. While the carbon market mechanism has been initially addressed in COP27, Taiwan is not a member of the United Nations, so it remains a major issue in finding a way for Taiwanese businesses to align themselves to such global community standards. In April 2022, Taiwan’s Executive Yuan has passed a bill amendment proposal to the “Greenhouse Gases Reduction and Management Act,” renaming it as the “Climate Change Response Act.” According to the bill amendment proposal, the government will begin levying carbon fees on large carbon emitters in 2024, in what is called a “Carbon Fee First” strategy that also incorporates voluntary reduction and credit trading. This policy has triggered discussions among industries and the academia.

In view of climate challenges, CTCI is committed to utilizing its core competencies, which is green engineering, to develop green energy and low carbon businesses. CTCI will turn ESG into its competitiveness and make ESG a part of the company's operations. Jointly with CTCI Education Foundation, CTCI will strive to fulfill a vision of net zero emissions with the 2030 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals in mind.
