CTCI Little Sustainable Engineers Summer Camp: Collective Effort for Sustainability & Net Zero to Happen

This July, the CTCI Education Foundation (CTCIEF), CTCI Group, and the Taiwan Institute for Sustainable Energy (TAISE) jointly hosted the “2024 Little Sustainable Engineers Summer Camp.” Combining sustainability and engineering as its core themes, the camp featured interactive activities, a tour of CTCI’s Fist Headquarters, CTCI Green Dream Plant, and MRT Beitou Resort Evacuation Experience Center. The camp concluded with team presentations of short films and photo highlights on how daily actions can contribute to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), marking a memorable end to a highly engaging event.

Over the course of three days, 49 budding young “engineers” from 29 elementary schools participated in activities that blend in engineering expertise and sustainability concepts. Led by CTCI engineers, the kids engaged in immersive experiences with 3D models and virtual reality technology, transporting them directly to an engineering site. Through video and computer-assisted tools, they also learned about CTCI’s intelligent engineering, procurement, and construction (iEPC) projects that have adopted smart features. On the sustainability side, the kids teamed up to play the “2030 SDGs Board Game,” and are guided by mentors to explore how their values and actions shape the world, as they enjoyed unserved sharing and much fun from team work. Another highlight was a workshop introducing the concepts and practical skills of creating SDGs-themed short videos, encouraging the kids to harness their creativity and advocate for sustainability.

The program also included an outdoor field trip to the MRT Evacuation Experience Center, where all kids deepened their understanding of low-carbon, sustainable public transport and learned critical skills such as using emergency contact buttons and operating escape exits. The next stop took them to CTCI subsidiary ECOVE’s Green Dream Plant in Miaoli, where they explored the operational processes of an incineration plant and learned about methods for enhancing equipment efficiency. They also visited the nearby Zhunan Wetlands to observe the natural habitat of the purple crow butterfly.

At the closing ceremony, each team took to the stage to share their reflections on their camp experiences. Certificates and gifts were awarded based on presentation skills, content, and creativity, encouraging the young participants to continue their journey in sustainability. Eugene Chien, CTCIEF Chairman, and Joanne Ho, CTCI Chief Sustainability Officer, expressed their hopes for these future leaders to champion sustainable ideals and become young ambassadors who embrace the bright future ahead with the persistence and determination of engineers.
