Guardian of Sustainable Earth: CTCI Keeps Top 1% Status in Dow Jones Sustainability Index and S&P Global’s Sustainability Yearbook Ranking

With the rise in global sustainability awareness, CTCI actively keeps eyes on the risks and opportunities brought about by issues surrounding environment, sustainability and governance (ESG) while engaging in the pursuit for earnings per share (EPS). As the engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) leader in Taiwan and among the top 100 worldwide, CTCI Group has been committed to sustainable development with its engineering profession for many years. Since 2015, CTCI has been invited to participate in the Dow Jones Sustainability Indices (DJSI) assessment, using the evaluation results to review our actions in environmental, social, and economic aspects to continuously enhance corporate competitiveness. During the assessment process, CTCI can adapt to trends in global sustainability through assessment questions, analyze potential risks and opportunities, and proactively take measures to turn challenges into advantages.

In 2023, CTCI continued to be selected as a component of the Dow Jones Sustainability Emerging Markets Index, with the overall performance ranking first in the global construction and engineering sector and getting the highest scores in both social and environmental aspects within the industry. CTCI has now achieved this honor for the ninth consecutive time, solidifying its position as the only engineering company from Taiwan to be included. This achievement not only set a new record, but underscored CTCI's commitment to driving ESG sustainability performance through its core engineering expertise, gaining significant recognition from international investment institutions.

The Rigorous and Internationally-Respected Selection Process of DJSI

Introduced in 1999 through a collaboration between Dow Jones & Company and sustainability asset management firm Robeco SAM, DJSI marks the world’s first sustainability development index extended from the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJI). Sampling approximately 3,400 companies covered by the Dow Jones Industrial Average, DJSI evaluates companies' sustainability capabilities through the Corporate Sustainability Assessment (CSA) in three major dimensions: economic, social, and environmental (ESG). Across 60 industries, companies ranking the top 10% in sustainability performance are selected as components of DJSI, which will be updated each year based on the sustainability performance results of CSA. Additionally, the annual assessment results are compiled into S&P Global’s Sustainability Yearbook, a globally recognized publication focusing on sustainability, with third-party verification ensuring the integrity of the evaluation process.

With a continued commitment to sustainability, CTCI remains a reigning champion, ranked in the top 1% by S&P Global in its 2024 Sustainability Yearbook making it the only construction and engineering company in the world to receive such recognition. With an impressive score of 86 out of 100, CTCI has consistently scored the highest in its industry. The S&P Global’s Sustainability Yearbook is one of the most influential ESG assessments globally, revealing the observations and results of DJSI on companies' ESG performance from the previous year that covered 62 major industries and approximately 9,400 assessed companies, with only 759 enterprises standing out in the end.

Leading the Engineering Industry in ESG Performance Across Three Dimensions

In terms of corporate governance, in 2023, CTCI Group achieved an amount of NT$111.8 billion in new contract, with NT$346.9 billion in backlog projects and NT$103.5 billion in revenue, both reaching historical highs. CTCI promotes ESG practices across all employees, committed to integrating sustainability into its corporate culture, making sustainability a core competitive advantage and DNA of CTCI. This includes revising the "Board Performance Evaluation Measures" to expand the dimension of "participation in sustainable operations (ESG)" to strengthen the board's supervision and participation role in promoting corporate sustainability. Additionally, group-level Sustainability and Net Zero Offices and Risk Management Offices have been established to enhance sustainability and risk management levels. In terms of supply chain management, 172 suppliers have joined the CTCI Supplier Net Zero Alliance, and the Taiwan Sustainable Engineering Forum is held annually, aiming to exert influence and lead the engineering industry towards sustainability.

In terms of environmental aspects, CTCI boasts "green projects" worldwide that balance economic and environmental concerns, assisting clients in achieving energy-saving and carbon emissions reduction goals. CTCI is not only setting goals for "net-zero headquarters and office locations by 2030, net-zero production sites by 2050," but also actively made "green commitments" and passed the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) review for carbon emissions reduction goals in January, 2024. Setting a decarbonization timeline aligned with the 1.5°C target from a 2022 base year, CTCI aims to reduce carbon emissions by 45% in Scope 1 (direct emissions) and Scope 2 (indirect emissions from electricity) by 2030, surpassing SBTi's 42% reduction target. To actively support sustainable supply chain management, CTCI also commits that 71% of its suppliers, covering purchased goods and services by emissions, will have science-based targets by 2028, thereby boosting the supply chain in the net zero direction.

Regarding biodiversity, CTCI has set targets to achieve No Net Loss (NNL) and comply with Zero Deforestation standards at operational sites by 2030, and to meet Net Positive Impact (NPI) at operational sites, NNL and Zero Deforestation standards throughout its value chain by 2050. CTCI is also engaging in external advocacy efforts and has become one of the pioneering enterprises to participate in the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD), disclosing financial information related to nature conservation initiatives.

In the realm of social responsibility, CTCI has long been committed to social welfare and has spared no effort in promoting sustainable education. Externally, combining the strength of CTCI Education Foundation and local communities, CTCI has actively expanded its social influence, promoting sustainable engineering education, social welfare, support for charitable organizations, green consumption, local culture, ecological issues, and volunteer participation. Internally, CTCI practices a diverse, equitable, and inclusive (DEI) workplace system, organizing multicultural activities and implementing welfare policies to ensure that colleagues can work and grow safely within the CTCI family.

In terms of international engagement, CTCI Education Foundation became Taiwan’s 11th non-governmental organization (NGO) observer admitted to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) process in 2022, joining the 28th Conference of the Parties (COP28) that took place in Dubai, the United Arab Emirates in 2023, to share Taiwan's efforts towards sustainability with the world.

Becoming Guardian of Sustainable Earth, Continually Expanding Sustainable Influence.

In the future, CTCI will continue to expand its sustainable influence by adopting progressive ESG strategies and planning. In terms of governance (G), CTCI will engage stakeholders to focus on 11 major issues, linking corporate sustainable development goals with key performance indicators (KPIs) to assess climate risks and opportunities, which will be disclosed in TCFD reports and climate and natural risk projects. Regarding the environment (E), CTCI will continue promoting performance growth through three dimensions of our "green engineering" expertise, completing greenhouse gas inventories of the entire group, setting reduction targets and green energy plans for each site, promoting CTCI Supplier Net Zero Alliance, and implementing the "CTCI Biodiversity Project - Green Water for Life Vitality" project. In the social aspect (S), CTCI is engaged in creating a diverse, equal, and inclusive workplace, establishing welfare policies that exceed legal requirements, and encouraging social participation. Through these efforts, CTCI will keep striving to realize its ESG vision as a Guardian of Sustainable Earth.
