The Third Taiwan Sustainable Engineering Symposium: Co-creating ESG Impact Across Value Chain

To resonate with the global trend in sustainability as well as the issues discussed during the COP28 United Nations Climate Change Conference, CTCI Education Foundation and CTCI Group jointly held the third Taiwan Sustainable Engineering Symposium on December 13, 2023. The symposium focused on co-creating ESG impact across the value chain and explored three core themes: "Net Zero EPC," "Resource Cycling," and "Social Impact." The symposium and workshops offered a chance for attendees to discuss global trends, learn about CTCI's achievements on sustainability, and explore practical cases. Attendees came from various sectors, including the business industry, government, academia, and research institutions, in hope of joining hands to deepen partnerships and collectively realize the ESG vision.

Various guests delivered keynote speeches at the symposium, including: John T. Yu, CTCI Group Chairman; Yang Gu, Chair Professor of Chemical Engineering at National Taiwan University of Science and Technology; William Weng, Senior Manager at CTCI’s LNG Project Division; and Ben Ji Jiang, Honorary Professor at National Taiwan University’s Department of Environmental Engineering. Yu, Weng, and Jiang talked about the practices related to sustainability in their keynote speeches, titled "Total Participation in ESG to Pioneer Net Zero EPC," "Green and Sustainable LNG Terminals," and "Benchmark and Sustainability Practices for International Engineering Projects." On the other hand, Professor Gu’s topic was about "Global Trends at COP28." As a representative of CTCI Education Foundation- an NGO observer-, professor Gu took this opportunity to share his insights on the COP 28 conference he joined and provided firsthand information and thoughts on the discussions around this year's keywords, which were action, ambition, justice, together, and transformation.

Eugene Chien, the ambassador-at-large of the Republic of China (Taiwan) and the chairman of CTCI Educational Foundation, speaks on stage.

CTCI Group Chairman John T. Yu shares insights during his keynote speech.

Eugene Chien, the ambassador-at-large of the Republic of China (Taiwan) and the chairman of CTCI Educational Foundation, highlighted the importance of holding a sustainable engineering symposium right after COP28. In addition to a just transition, he said, the world economy is currently focused on the issue of Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM). Enterprises should actively prepare and transform. The remaining major issue that will be confronting Taiwan, should it wish to keep pace with the global trend, is to decide which carbon market mechanism to adopt, and how. The decisions and actions taken at this stage will affect the overall prosperity 30 years on. Chien encouraged all engineers and professionals to continue learning and creating infinite opportunities.
CTCI Group Chairman Yu stated that CTCI has long been committed to sustainability through its core engineering business. The Group has been making tangible contributions to the planet’s sustainable development by creating green engineering projects that benefit the economy and the environment alike. Green engineering includes three aspects: green technology, green contracting, and green investment. He also pointed out that he was keen to share CTCI’s achievements on sustainability with the audience because CTCI can maximize the sustainability impact by guiding the engineering industry and working with its supply chain partners.

In 2022, CTCI Educational Foundation was honored to be notified that it was admitted to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) processes as the 11th non-governmental organization (NGO) observer in Taiwan. Therefore, the foundation representatives enjoyed observer access to the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP28) between November 30 and December 12, 2023, where they witnessed nations reaching a consensus on commitments to "transitioning energy systems away from fossil fuels," marking a historic moment in the history of the UN Climate Change Conference.

In the face of global climate change challenges, CTCI is committed to building a sustainable supply chain, investing in green energy and low-carbon industries, as well as incorporating ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) principles into its core business, making them part of its DNA and competitive advantage. In the future, CTCI and CTCI Education Foundation will continue to align themselves to the United Nations' 2030 Sustainable Development Goals and jointly move towards the net zero vision, in hope of creating a better future.
