The Hidden Support Behind Every Business Trip

— Archana Kumari, Administration specialist at Administration Department, CINDA Engineering & Construction
Hello, my name is Archana Kumari, an administration specialist at CINDA Engineering & Construction (a CTCI Group company in India). I come from Himachal Pradesh, which is a beautiful northern state in India nestled in the Himalayan mountains known for breathtaking landscapes, peaceful valleys, and apple orchards. Growing up in such a beautiful place with warm hospitality has taught me the importance of simplicity, balance, kindness, and community. After completing my Bachelor’s degree, I earned a diploma from the famous Frankfinn Institute of Air Hostess and worked in front office administration and the hospitality industry, becoming well-experienced in serving customers. The fast-paced work environment presented many challenges as well as opportunities for growth. I developed strong communication, customer service, and organizational skills.

The Administration Aspect of an Engineering Company

It’s been six years since I worked at CINDA, where I oversee various administrative operations, including domestic and international travel arrangements, visa processing, insurance, employee administrative support, as well as accommodation and transportation for expatriate employees. The reason I joined CINDA was because of its strong reputation in the engineering and construction industry, as well as its commitment to professionalism, quality, and employee development. For someone who loves to learn and grow like me, it was an invaluable opportunity. Here, I have had the chance to work with colleagues from different countries and cultures. As part of a globalized CTCI Group, CINDA’s work environment has helped me broaden my perspective, strengthen communication skills, and enhance my confidence in handling diverse responsibilities.

Administration may not be the kind of job that most people readily associate with an engineering company, but it plays an important role in ensuring smooth business operations. Construction and engineering projects often involve employees traveling between different locations and working according to strict project schedules. Administrators coordinate and plan behind the scene to ensure employees arrive safely and on time, avoiding further work delay. Despite our inconspicuous role, we are important.

One of my most memorable experiences was coordinating the relocation for a large group of expatriate employees in a very short period of time. I had to ensure everything was ready before they moved in, which includes finding new residential facilities and arranging transportation. I prepared a clear checklist, prioritizing urgent tasks, and closely coordinating with vendors, drivers, employees, and other stakeholders. There were times when I had to work overtime, but seeing that the employees moved into their new accommodation comfortably made the effort worthwhile.

Tips for Living in India

India is a culturally diverse nation, with different languages and traditions. It is also a modern and highly hospitable country. Some foreigners initially see India as crowded, busy, and chaotic. Once they become familiar with their surroundings, they find India much easier and more comfortable than they expected. It is important to be flexible and have patience in India, as not all things work according to a fixed schedule. Traffic in cities may be more congested, so plan extra travel time ahead. Remember to check in advance the destination’s security, nearby facilities, basic services, and internet connection.

Food in India is diverse, and every region has its own taste. I usually advise expatriates to start with food they are familiar with, and gradually try Indian cuisine. Especially, they should be careful with spicy food. Drinking bottled or purified water is strongly recommended.

Dussehra, One of the Most Celebrated Festivals in My Home State

Dussehra is one of the most special cultural events in Himachal Pradesh, which usually falls between September and October. It is one of the three major festivals in India, celebrating the story from Hindu mythology where Prince Rama defeated the ten-headed demon king Ravana with the help of a monkey army and rescued his abducted, beloved wife, Princess Sita. The festival symbolizes the victory of light over darkness.

What makes Dussehra of Himachal Pradesh distinct is that celebrations begin after Dussehra has already ended in many other parts of India, and it lasts for several days. People from different villages and communities would bring hundreds of deity effigies to the Kullu Valley, performing religious rituals, music, and dance. It is not only a religious festival but also an important cultural gathering where people come together and celebrate their local traditions. Today, Kullu Dussehra has become a large, international event. I highly recommend you to check it out the next time you visit India.
