Exploring Cultures, Building Bonds: My Journey at CTCI
-Muhammad Ubaid Khan, Equipment Construction Engineer at Construction Operation Department II, CTCI Corporation
Could you briefly tell us about yourself?
I am Muhammad Ubaid Khan from Pakistan. I graduated from North University of China, with a major in mechanical engineering. I once worked in Pakistan and Saudi Arabia, and my time in Saudi Arabia was significant for a personal reason: It's where I met my life partner from Taiwan, and we got married in Saudi Arabia. Since 2023, I've been working as an equipment construction engineer at CTCI in Taiwan. My role involves providing technical support for the installation of GT, HRSG and welding of HRSG pipelines, as well as preparing layout plans, site plans, and construction design documents. I routinely perform field measurements and design modifications as needed. I'm always in communication with the project team, ensuring that we work together effectively to achieve project objectives.

What made you join CTCI?
When working in Saudi Arabia, I had the privilege of collaborating with reputable engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) companies on various projects, enabling me to become acquainted with CTCI during my time there. One of the primary reasons I was drawn to CTCI is its exceptional reputation in the industry and expertise in sectors such as petrochemicals and power, which bring a sense of pride to work here. Another aspect that attracted me to CTCI is the potential for professional growth and development. With CTCI’s diverse portfolio of projects, I can be exposed to a wide range of engineering challenges and cutting-edge technologies, allowing me to expand my skill set and enhance my expertise. Moreover, CTCI's collaborative work environment and emphasis on innovation resonated with my professional aspirations. The prospect of working alongside talented individuals, sharing ideas, and collectively finding innovative solutions to complex engineering problems greatly appealed to me. Lastly, with CTCI's global presence, the chances to work on projects in different countries, collaborate with diverse teams, and gain insights into various cultures and working practices are highly appealing. It would not only broaden my professional horizons but also enrich my overall experience as an engineer.

Could you give us some examples of the foreign culture and people that impress you during your stay (when being relocated)?
Every time I visit Saudi Arabia, I am amazed by the locals’ warmness, generosity, and kindness. The intricate embroidery and beautiful designs on the thobes and abayas, and the traditional arts and crafts of Saudi Arabia, including the intricate calligraphy, beautiful woven carpets, and meticulously crafted pottery and metalwork, always leave a lasting impression on me. The magnificent Islamic architecture in Saudi Arabia, such as the Grand Mosque in Mecca and the Prophet’s Mosque in Medina, is awe-inspiring and evokes a sense of spirituality. Besides, from the aromatic spices used in Kabsa to the tender and flavorful meat in Mandi, every Saudi Arabian meal is a delightful culinary experience. Lastly, the cultural festivals in Saudi Arabia never cease to impress me. The Janadriyah National Festival, in particular, offers a wonderful opportunity to immerse myself in the vibrant traditions, music, dance, and cuisine of Saudi Arabian culture.
How do you get rid of work stress?
In addition to travel, by engaging in conversations with coworkers, sharing experiences, and discussing coping strategies, a positive work environment is built that helps me alleviate stress. Physical exercise is also an effective stress-reliever. I usually dedicate my time to activities that help me unwind, such as listening to the music, reading a book, or spending time in nature to achieve work-life balance. It's important to remember that everyone's experience and coping mechanisms may differ, so finding what works the best for oneself is the key.

Could you share some interesting experiences you had when working in CTCI?
As a team member of the Taipower 2600MW Taichung Cycle Power Plant Project (TCCPP), a joint venture between CTCI and GE Vernova United states, I had the chance to work with GE Vernova employees from countries such as the U.S., Malaysia, the Philippines, India, and also personnel from Taipower. I am impressed by the different working habits of people from various cultures. Being married to a Taiwanese combined with studying in China give me the advantage of being able to easily communicate with Taipower engineers and address their concerns. Another advantage is that I speak Hindi fluently, which contributes to smooth communication with Malaysians and Indians. Within our team, we actively exchange work experiences and culture to enhance mutual understandings. One of my colleagues, Jimmy, has been particularly instrumental in this regard. Through his guidance, I have gained valuable insights into the local work culture, which has proven invaluable in my professional growth. I feel fortunate to join CTCI. By leveraging individual expertise and working collaboratively, we can achieve greater success than through individual efforts alone. At the same time, I have been able to enhance my knowledge and skills, thanks to the support of all CTCI colleagues.
