Stay On Top of the Trend and Keep Providing the Most Reliable Engineering Services

Michael Yang, Vice Chairman of CTCI Group/ CEO of Group Engineering Business

We live in a world that is constantly changing, where global state of affairs fluctuates, smart technologies are progressing, and efforts on net zero emissions are being undertaken. They would impact and challenge the sustainable operation of any enterprise. In view of this, CTCI is staying on top of the trend and actively making investments in innovation, research and development. We at CTCI are applying smart technologies to our services and making engineering projects green. We are also promoting a value engineering service called "net-zero EPC," while supporting the growth of our talented staff. These help us realize our vision to become "the most reliable global engineering services provider."

Following an outstanding operational performance in 2022, where we saw unprecedented record of Group revenue and backlogs, CTCI Group’s growth momentum remains strong in 2023. As of March, our consolidated revenue has reached NTD 21.8 billion, while the contract value has reached NTD 44.1 billion, and a backlog at NTD 359.1 billion. We will work harder and faster to reach the 100-billion revenue goal!

Offering Green Engineering Services; Seizing Business Opportunities that Arise from Environmental Protection and Carbon Emissions Reduction

As a “Guardian of the Earth’s Sustainability,” CTCI approaches green engineering from three aspects: green technology, green contracting, and green investment. These help accelerate CTCI’s path towards the goal of net-zero emissions. Thanks to green technology applications in our contracted projects, we have seen a 396% increase in the number of low-carbon and environment protection backlog projects between 2015 and 2022. On the other hand, our green investment through the forms of BOO, BOT, and BTO has exceeded NTD 40 billion, and we have secured around NTD 7 billion in green financing from banks.

The following are some of our recent achievements in "green engineering." They exemplify CTCI’s contribution to the Earth's sustainability, global energy transition, and the public’s green living.

1. CTCI Plays a Role in Helping Global Energy Transition
As an enterprise attentive to the business opportunities that global energy transition brings, CTCI remains the only firm in Taiwan capable of handling "gas-fired power plants" and "LNG receiving terminal" EPC projects. With a 74% market share in gas-fired power plants in Taiwan, we help generate cleaner electricity with lower carbon emissions by applying green technology. Our ongoing projects include Taichung, Hsingta, and Senba Phase II gas-fired power plants, and the Taoyuan Guantang LNG Third Receiving Terminal.

In addition, CTCI helps create clean, renewable energy. In solar energy, we have so far invested and developed 154 MW capacity of solar farms, while helping maintain and operate 476 MW capacity of solar farms. We are keeping a close eye on the business opportunities that may arise from a liberalized power market, such as becoming an electricity seller.

In offshore wind power, we have undertaken numerous pin pile and transition pieces fabrication projects, equivalent to 1,140 MW installed capacity. We have also tapped into the high-tech sectors in recent years, involved in plant-building for a major Taiwanese DRAM company, a major Taiwanese electronics company based in India, and a foreign company that wishes to set up data centers in Taiwan. We have set a track record in energy storage— a field that is associated with electric vehicle opportunities and ESG (environment, social, and governance)— by successfully completing solid-state battery life cycle assessment for ProLogium Technology; a battery factory for Molie Quantum Energy, which is part of Taiwan Cement's business portfolio; and a lithium battery factory in Kaohsiung's Hefa Industrial Park. We are eyeing on a more comprehensive and diversified energy business portfolio, so as to aid energy transition.

2. CTCI Makes Green Living Come True
Through green engineering, CTCI allows people to have greener living. Mass rapid transportation, or MRT, is a means of green transport that relies on our expertise in electromechanical systems and trackwork. We have been involved in Taiwan’s MRT projects since the very beginning, the Muzha Line. Subsequently, we have undertaken works for the Nangang Banqiao Line, Tucheng Extension Line, Xinzhuang Luzhou Line, Xinyi Songshan Line, Taichung MRT, and Kaohsiung Orange lines. Currently, we are constructing Taipei MRT’s Wanda Line and Circular Line. We have also expanded our business overseas, participating in and completing Singapore's Downtown Line Stage 3, Thomson-East Coast Line Stages 1-3, and the Gali Batu Depot Expansion. We have brought a safe and comfortable means of transportation to local residents, for which we were commended by the Singapore government.

In water resources, we have over 40 years of experience in sewer systems throughout Taiwan. As sewer systems become widespread thanks to modernization, domestic wastewater is no longer discharged to rivers, thus making rivers more accessible. However, domestic wastewater treatment is not only our sole expertise. We are also experts in recycling and reusing industrial wastewater. One of our recent major achievements includes the TSMC Southern Taiwan Science Park Water Reclamation Plant. The plant, which began commercial operation in September 2022, is the world's first wastewater reclamation plant that regenerates industrial wastewater and reuses it for the semiconductor process. Another example is Taoyuan North District Water Resource Center, which is an ongoing project and northern Taiwan’s first water reclamation plant. These show our effort in helping clients address their water challenges as their businesses grow. Once they use reclaimed water, they will no longer need to compete for water with the surrounding residents and farmers. This is extremely meaningful amidst the water crises caused by extreme climate events in recent years.

At CTCI, we are committed to using our engineering expertise to create green engineering projects worldwide, so as to ensure the Earth stays sustainable. Although we may be invisible to the public eye, we are indispensable when people want to enjoy their green living. We not only want our businesses to grow. We also want the environment to benefit from our growth

Staying Sharp on Technology and R&D; "Net-Zero EPC" as Our Value Engineering Service

For a long time, we have been researching and developing an intelligent EPC platform (iEPC) and the digital twin technology. We combine a cloud-native mindset, which seeks to allow access to the platform at anytime and anywhere, with our engineering-native leverage. As we construct physical plants, we simultaneously create 3D virtual plants, collecting comprehensive data during project execution. Once we deliver the physical plant, we also digitally handover the virtual plant to the client. The “Digital Handover,” which requires no setup or installation, is an intuitive operation that allows clients to quickly get started and access relevant engineering information. In the future, we will integrate all existing intelligent systems within CTCI Group and provide our clients with a value service called "Digital O&M," which makes data collection, analysis, plant operation, and plant maintenance more convenient.

Another value service that we provide our clients by incorporating innovative technology to our engineering, is the "Net-Zero EPC." This refers to applying green technology to every stage of EPC (engineering, procurement, and construction), while collaborating with global partners to build low-carbon-emissions supply chains. The ultimate goal is to help clients save energy and cut carbon emissions. To this end, we hold "Net-Zero EPC Improvement Proposal Meetings" every month to keep gathering "Net-Zero EPC" solutions, some of which have been implemented in projects worldwide.

Moreover, we continue to develop robot technologies and apply them in real life. The Pipeline Cleaning Robot, one of such technologies, has been tested at project site. Based on the feedback, we are currently upgrading the robot to version 2.0 for improved functionality. The Piping Flange Management Robot, another recent success of our robot technologies, can help secure pipeline flanges quickly and make digitally record. This type of robot is currently being tested. We will keep improving, so that our clients receive faster, better, and more sustainable services.

Supporting Our Employees to Ensure Faster Growth; “Most Reliable” Vision Realized

Globalization continues to bring CTCI opportunities, yet such opportunities may mean larger and harder projects. To achieve faster growth, employee training and development are crucial. We not only continue to source outstanding engineering talents from around the world, but also make tailored development plans for all employees. Measures to help fast-track and level up employees’ expertise and competencies include: cross-departmental and overseas rotations; Mentor & Mentee programs; and "CTCI University," a borderless and real-time digital learning platform. Employees aside, we are also making a national contribution and sustainable impact by promoting engineering education through CTCI Education Foundation and CTCI Learning, a publicly accessible learning platform.

Looking forward, our CTCI team will continue to uphold our commitment to "professionalism, teamwork, integrity, and innovation," which is our corporate culture. We will insist on safety and quality when carrying out projects around the world. We look forward to fulfilling our vision as "the most reliable global engineering services provider."
