My Memorable Experience Living in the U.S.

— Yi-Ju Wang (Eros), Architectural Engineer, Civil & Building Engineering Department, CTCI Corporation

Enjoying my life in Arizona.

Could you briefly tell us about yourself?

Hi, my name is Eros, a Taiwanese who currently lives in New Taipei city. I’m an architectural designer. My motto is “Work Hard and Play Hard,” which means to find smart and the right ways to deal with the problems so that I can save time. Before going to the US, I never had a chance to live in another country for such a long time. CTCI gave me an amazing opportunity to see the world. I knew this would be a life-changing opportunity, and I knew I made the right choice.

What made you join CTCI?

Before joining CTCI one year ago, I had worked in an architectural firm. This was big change for me. I learned new knowledge from CTCI projects, not only about Taiwan’s architectural code but also international code. This opportunity enables me become an international professional engineer.

Could you give us some examples of the foreign culture and people that impress you during your stay (when being relocated)?

One of the things that struck me when I met different cultures in the US is the interpersonal relationship. For example, people there are very easy going and chatting about anything at any time. I didn’t have to worry about the politeness issues, and could just be kind and be myself. In the office, we would usually share about our holiday plans and travel plans, especially before Monday morning meeting. We care about every team member and enjoy sharing with and listen to each other’s stories.

Most of the people encouraged us to try anything and enjoy life. They showed their appreciation to everyone, including to their colleagues and supervisors. They taught me how to deal with problems with a good sense of humor, as well as showing a positive and appreciative attitude.

I learned how to strike a balance between work and life: simply ask for enough amount of work time, do a good job, and then leave on time. Working overtime is not an option.

How do you get rid of work stress?

1.Traveling: I would make travel plans and go anywhere, such as national parks or other cities.
2.Hiking: I love going into the mountains and nature parks.
3.Jogging: Jogging allows me to get fresh air into my body and helps refresh my brain. Once I get back to work, I would have regained full power and released stress.

My colleagues at CTCI Americas were very easy going. They taught me how to deal with problems with a good sense of humor.

Could you share some interesting experiences you had when working in CTCI?

I learned how to cook when I lived in the US, and we would invite our co-workers to a home-made dinner. Also, for the first time in my life, I got the chance to play snowboard, interior climbing and skateboard. Finally, I had a chance to try college food in the US. The student cafeteria offers over 20 types of dishes just for $12 dollars, which is amazing!
